Infrastructure Mapping Tool
In collaboration with King County and the Cascade Harvest Coalition, the King Conservation District has developed an easy-to-use online tool that farmers, cottage industry business owners, facility owners, and policy makers can access to expand opportunities for local food production in King County.
Local Institutional Food Team
The Local Institutional Food Team (LIFT) is here to help you source local food for your institution! We are a network of resource providers and industry experts that provide technical assistance to purchasers looking for local farm products and those wanting to start or participate in existing projects and programs that support local agriculture.
Equipment Share Program
The following pieces of equipment are available for loan to landowners in KCD’s service area. KCD’s service area includes 34 cities and all of unincorporated King County. The incorporated cities of Enumclaw, Federal Way, Skykomish, Milton, and Pacific are outside KCD’s boundaries, but landowners in those communities may use on a case-by-case basis for an additional fee.
A hay probe is a sharpened tube that is used to take a representative sample of the forage in a bale of hay. KCD has a hay probe (also called a core sampler) available for loan at no cost. The hay probe is used to collect forage samples that can be sent to a laboratory for analysis. Knowing the nutrient composition of hay can help animal owners match their feeding program to meet animal nutrition requirements or help hay growers in marketing their hay to customers.
A weed wrench tool is very helpful in permanent removal of invasive species such as scotch broom. Successful removal of scotch broom requires digging out the root system.
The King Conservation District has a two-yard compost spreader available for loan to landowners in the District’s service area.* The spreader is available for a $50 fee to help offset delivery, insurance and maintenance costs.
Eco-Drill No Till Drill
KCD has a KASCO Eco-Drill KED-72 no-till seed drill that is equipped with a large seed box and a legume seed box for effective multi-species planting.
Poultry Processing Equipment
The King Conservation District provides low-cost rental of equipment for small-scale producers to safely process poultry for home consumption, or to slaughter poultry for direct marketing with a WSDA permit. At this time no other poultry processing equipment is available for rent in King County. The KCD project helps producers fill the demand for locally-grown chicken, turkey, and other poultry.
Rhino Limer Drop Spreader
The RhinoLimer drop spreader is available for application of lime, fertilizer and some seed types.
