KCD is recruiting TWO AmeriCorps members through Washington Service Corps to contribute to our Conservation Education and Outreach Project from Sept 2023 – July 2024.

Positions currently available: Conservation Education Specialist and Community Agricultural Specialist

If you are interested, please follow the instructions on the position descriptions at kingcd.org/jobs by June 23, 2022.

New this year – living stipends have increased for Washington Service Corps members while serving with KCD. Members will receive $3,352.38 per month ($35,199/year pre-tax) in addition to a $6,895 education award upon completion of a successful 1700-hour term and other benefits including basic health insurance, student loan forbearance, SNAP (food stamps), and training.

In our final post for #CompostAwarenessWeek, we highlight KCD's Landowner Incentive Program.

Cooperators are eligible for cost-share assistance to implement conservation best management practices (BMPs) on private property. One BMP is a Waste Storage Facility, such as a manure bin system. This allows livestock owners to compost animal waste into a more beneficial amendment for pastures, crop fields and yards, while protecting ground and surface water quality.

It's Composting Awareness Week and we're catching up on this wacky Wednesday with three great tips.

Compost is one of the best soil amendments one can use to improve soil health. We recommend testing soils regularly, whether you are growing forage for livestock, gardening, maintaining an orchard or managing a woodlot for wood production. Test results help you to apply the correct amount of amendments, while protecting surface and ground water and ensuring that soil nutrients and other conditions affecting plant growth are present in the right amounts.

One of the key ingredients of good compost can be manure and KCD's Manure Match is a simple, free way to recycle valuable nutrients and organic matter. If you are a livestock owner in King County with surplus manure, you can submit a request to be added to the Manure Offered tab and offer your surplus manure for free to people seeking aged manure and/or mulch. If you need manure for your yard or garden, you can also submit a request to be added to the Manure Wanted tab.

KCD has a two cubic yard manure spreader available for loan to cooperators in our service area for use from April 1 to September 31. We recommend that users spread compost rather than raw manure because nutrients in composted manure are more readily available for pasture grasses or crops, and that reduces the risk of potential excess runoff.
