Hint: This plant has unique peeling bark that people believed grew in nine layers. Even though that is untrue, the name stuck. It prefers to be planted in wet or moist areas and its beautiful white and pink blooms are valuable food sources for wildlife. This plant is a great vegetation option for waterside properties.

King Conservation District is now accepting applic

King Conservation District is now accepting applications for the Education and Outreach Specialist AmeriCorps position. KCD’s current Education and Outreach Specialist, Rosie, has served as the Education and Outreach Specialist for the past two years and coordinated with high school students and teachers to help them prepare for Washington Envirothon, an annual environmental science and knowledge competition. She’s helped to plan virtual and in-person Envirothon competitions and collaborated with teams of students from fifteen high schools across King County and the state to prepare and learn about environmental topics.

With Rosie’s service term ending this summer, the Education and Outreach Specialist AmeriCorps position is accepting applications until 6/19! KCD is sponsoring this position at the Tier 4 level and the stipend will be $3,143.24/month. To more about this position visit the link in our bio.

King Conservation District and the City of Seattle

King Conservation District and the City of Seattle Government/Seattle Office of Sustainability & Environment are continuing our longstanding collaboration to invest in natural resource improvements that are led by or in deep partnership with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities.

KCD received 27 applications from amazing community organizations requesting over $2.4 million dollars in funding, though the program had only $761,000 available to award this year.

In our final post for #CompostAwarenessWeek, we highlight KCD's Landowner Incentive Program.

Cooperators are eligible for cost-share assistance to implement conservation best management practices (BMPs) on private property. One such BMP is a waste Storage Facility, such as a manure bin system. This allows livestock owners to compost animal waste into a more beneficial amendment for pastures, crop fields and yards, while protecting ground and surface water quality.

Presenter John Bethel will be speaking about the g

Presenter John Bethel will be speaking about the geological features relevant to marine beach and bluff homeowners of the Puget sound region at the upcoming Where the Water Begins workshops and beach walks on May 14 and 21.

He spent 30 years with King County working on reviewing permit applications in geologically hazardous areas, developing King County Code related to geologic hazards, and managing stream restoration and channel stabilization projects. He's currently a Licensed Geologist and Engineering Geologist in Washington State,

KCD has a two cubic yard manure spreader available

KCD has a two cubic yard manure spreader available for loan to cooperators in KCD’s service area. It is available for use from April 1 to September 31. We recommend that users spread compost rather than raw manure because nutrients in composted manure are more readily available for pasture grasses or crops, and that reduces the risk of potential excess runoff. Where the Water Begins presenter Kollin Higgins’ favorite marine animal is not the salmon he spends his time protecting as King County Department of Natural Resources Senior Ecologist, but rather the unassuming ratfish.

He will be at our workshops and beach walks on May 14 and 21 speaking about salmon, ratfish, and how to protect marine fish and wildlife when you live on Puget Sound.
