On March 31st, KCD hosted the 2026 Northwest Regional Envirothon competition at the Brightwater Center in Woodinville. Ninety students, representing 12 high schools from King, Snohomish, and Skagit counties showed up to flex their skills and knowledge in the natural sciences and compete for a chance to move on to the state competition in May!
After months of preparation and attending topic-specific workshops held around the region, the 17 teams of students were tested with practical environmental science challenges. Students demonstrated their knowledge with hands-on exams in forestry, aquatics, wildlife, and soil sciences, as well as with an oral presentation on the topic of non-point source pollution.
The final results came down to a one-point difference with Tesla STEM High School placing first after scoring 524 out of 600 possible points, followed closely by Lincoln High School with 523 points. Both teams will represent King County and Washington’s northwest region at the state competition in Okanogan. They will be joined by H.M. Jackson High School from Snohomish County and Mount Vernon Christian School from Skagit County. Thank you to all the teams who participated in this year’s competition!
These challenges exercise participants’ critical thinking, collaboration, and creative problem solving, while building a community of future leaders in the natural sciences! Envirothon also provides students with the opportunity to explore complex environmental challenges, connect with professionals from the field, and learn about careers in conservation and natural resource management.
