KCD is excited to announce this year’s winners for the Washington State Envirothon competition! On May 22 and 23, over fifty students from eleven high schools across Washington State traveled to Camp Kirby on Samish Island to practice their skills and demonstrate their knowledge in the environmental sciences. Each team that attended had previously placed in their respective regional Envirothon competitions to move on to the state competition.
Attendees were able to enjoy Camp Kirby’s beach and grounds beside the Salish Sea. The unique setting and time around a campfire the evening before the main event allowed teams to build comradery and connect with new friends over their shared passion for nature.
On the day of the competition, students were tested on their knowledge of Soils & Land Use, Forestry, Aquatic Ecology, and Wildlife. Each team also delivered oral presentations, exhibiting their understanding of current forest conservation and their abilities to communicate environmental issues. Whether they took home a trophy or not, each team showed an impressive commitment to the natural sciences and demonstrated promise as future leaders for conservation.
We are proud to announce the top scoring teams, all hailing from King County:
1st Place: Roosevelt High School with Top Score in Aquatics
2nd Place: Lincoln High School with Top Score in Wildlife, Forestry, and Presentation
3rd Place: Tesla STEM with Top Score in Soils
The 1st Place Winners, Roosevelt High School, are moving on to represent Washington State in the North American Envirothon Competition, taking place this July in Calgary, Alberta.
