Man plants small tree in urban forested park.

The Green Cities Network consists of 14 cities dedicated to restoring urban parks through community-led stewardship.

Based on professional park management plans, city coordinators train volunteer park stewards to identify plants, use field tools, develop restoration plans, and recruit and supervise other volunteers. Stewards host events in parks to remove invasive species and plant native trees and shrubs.

Green Cities program coordinators focus on uplifting community voices to inspire local change and foster a volunteer environment focused on belonging and inclusivity. They meet quarterly to share best practices for restoration and volunteer engagement. Previously led by Forterra, that co-founded the Green Seattle Partnership with Seattle in 2004, KCD began coordinating the quarterly network meetings in 2026 and is exploring more ways that we can contribute to Green Cities efforts across King County.

Green Cities volunteers ensure that current and future generations can continue to reap the benefits of urban parks by enhancing and protecting them. If you’d like to get involved you can find your local Green Cities program below.
