KCD Kicks off Snohomish Basin Coordination

In 2025, KCD was awarded a Department of Ecology grant of nearly $2.7 million for a ground-breaking pilot project: the Snohomish Basin Riparian Collaborative. Studies of the past several decades have made clear the lofty restoration goals needed to achieve meaningful salmon recovery in the Snohomish Basin. But the challenges of coordinating across diverse stakeholders, jurisdictions, sub-watershed geographies, and labor force availability have proved to be a frustrating obstacle for the dedicated on-the-ground organizations, and work is falling behind.

Managed out of KCD and guided with a bottom-up approach by our partners, the Snohomish Basin Partnership Pilot Program will establish coordination for restoration in the Snohomish Basin with special focus on the Snoqualmie Valley and Pilchuck River watersheds. Over the next three years, KCD will work to build a central database to more efficiently link organizations and their projects with resources, labor force, and funding. The partnership will also include a streamlined maintenance program and community-centric outreach that will help build long term stewardship relationships with the people who live and work in the Basin.

The goal of this pilot program is to make coordination faster and easier so restoration organizations can get out in the field doing what they do best—and help put the Basin back on track towards recovery goals in time to make a difference. Partners include the Tulalip Tribe of Indians, Snoqualmie Indian Tribe, Stewardship Partners, Snoqualmie Valley Preservation Alliance, Snohomish County, Snohomish Conservation District, and the Latino Education Training Institute.

KCD is excited to be in the beginning stages of this partnership. Stay tuned for updates!
