Are you interested in becoming a KCD Board Supervisor? KCD Board Supervisors help steer KCD and the important conservation work we do. It is important to us that our board reflects the diversity of King County and its conservation needs. If you think that your voice can help KCD build clean water, healthy forests, and strong local food systems, consider applying to run in the 2023 Board Election.

The candidate filing period for the Seat #3 election for the King Conservation District Board of Supervisors is December 5, 2022, at 8:00am through December 9, 2022 at 5:00pm.

Thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus) This fast-growin

Thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus)

This fast-growing thornless shrub would make a great addition to any backyard garden. Thimbleberry is identifiable by its soft and fuzzy maple-shaped leaves. It blooms in late spring through mid-summer, and the white flowers provide nectar for native pollinators. The red, raspberry-shaped berries ripen mid-to-late summer and are edible and sweet.

The edible berries are eaten by finches, wrens, jays, and bushtits.

Thanks to everyone who braved the smoke and came o

Thanks to everyone who braved the smoke and came out last Saturday for #orcarecoveryday! 82 degrees and smokey in mid October shows why it's all the more pressing that we take actions to help our environment and wildlife.

Together, we planted several hundred shrubs along Langlois Creek that will grow to help keep the water cool and clean and benefit the salmon that our local Southern Resident Orca depend on.

Special thanks to Congresswoman and Councilmember Sarah Perry for coming out and talking to the group about the importance of conservation in King County.

Red Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa) Red elderberry

Red Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa)

Red elderberry is a favorite of native wildlife. It ranges in size from a shrub to a small tree, reaching a maximum height of around 20 feet tall. It can grow in sun or partial shade and either dry or moist soil, making it a very versatile plant. The large deciduous leaves are divided into 5-7 lance-shaped leaflets. Conical clusters of white flowers grow into small bright red fruits.

Join a KCD Washington Conservation Corps Crew!

Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) crews are an essential part of KCD’s work enhancing riparian shorelines across King County – they’re also a lot of fun! There’s still time to join, If you’re interested, or know someone who might be you have until October 10 to apply for an October start date!

The KCD restoration crew focuses on restoring rural shorelines, urban shorelines, and urban forests throughout the service term. Winter tasks include preparing and planting at new restoration sites, and summer tasks include maintaining new and old sites through invasive plant control, erosion control, and herbivory protection. And members get to experience a variety of other project types during the year, in addition to assisting at the KCD plant nursery.

The Southern Resident Orca that call Puget Sound h

The Southern Resident Orca that call Puget Sound home face a number of hurdles. But key to their survival is ensuring that their primary food source, Chinook salmon, is abundant.

Due to habitat loss, climate change and increased pollution, it has become even more difficult for migrating salmon to make the journey home to create new fish. In order to save our orcas, we must start with our salmon.
