Midway Covenant Church in Des Moines was previously awarded funding from KCD’s Community Agriculture Seed Money Grant to transform an unused corner of the church’s lot into a community garden. The church’s pastor Rev. Shaun used the grant funding to build twenty raised garden beds and fill them with soil, as well as a rainwater cistern for irrigation. It is now a space where anyone in the surrounding community can spend time outdoors and connect with nature as well as with each other.
Rev. Shaun’s goal for creating the garden is to make nature more accessible in a developed area like Des Moines. He sees gardening as a way to support people’s wellbeing and hopes the garden he raised gives his neighbors the opportunity to share the joy of working with soil, growing food, and connecting with fellow gardeners.
The Midway Covenant community garden has succeeded in that goal! Most of its gardeners are community members from nearby apartment complexes who passed by. Shaun says it has become a place for neighbors to connect and learn from one another. Each gardener there brings their own experience and expertise to share, which you can observe throughout the garden in the six widely different methods of growing tomatoes.
Rev. Shaun aims to continue expanding the garden so more people can take part. KCD is pleased to support Midway Covenant Church through our Community Agriculture Seed Money Grant and look forward to seeing the project continue to grow.
